You will need:
- For the crumble
- 300g plain flour
- 175g sugar
-
200g unsalted butter
- For the filling
- 450g apples
- 50g sugar
- 1 pinch of ground cinnamon
- Put your flour and sugar into a bowl and mix it in.
- Add butter (cubed) into bowl and rub it together - you can used your fingers to do is but I usually use a fork. The consistency which you are looking for is like bread crumbs.
- Put topping to one side
- Cut apples up into cubes. You can put it straight into the pie and bake but when I do it I usually cook the apples first in a sauce pan. Put them in a sauce pan and add sugar until the apples are soft.
- Add the apple filling to a large bowl and add the topping on the top.
- Put into the oven on Gas Mark 4
- Cook for around 40 minutes or until top is golden brown.
- Serve with custard or cream
Obviously you can do this with other fruit too.. But you cant beat a hearty apple crumble - especially on those cold autumn winter nights!
